Week 5 - TouchDesigner Deep Dive

Okay, I'll admit "deep dive" for this week's title is a bit of an exaggeration, but I couldn't say no to the rhyme (week five, deep dive haha). 

I've had a rough week and haven't been able to play with Touch Designer as much as I would have liked, but I have been starting to catch on what I have worked on. As of writing this post, I haven't looked at all the videos quite yet, but feel confident I will get through them soon.

The operators for TouchDesigner are the following:

  • TOP: texture operators
  • CHOP: channel operators
  • SOP: surface operators
  • MAT: materials (works with surface)
  • DAT: data
I also figured out how to connect my Data OSC app on my phone to TouchDesigner, which is going to be very useful for my chair project, which is how I will now be referring to Project 1. For my chair project, I am going to be using the compass tool, on the app, to track what direction the user is facing. This will be connected to TouchDesigner which will control a protector. Depending on where the user is facing, a different memory will play on the wall. For this effect, I was wanting the memory location on the wall to also depend on where the user is facing. I am going to have to use image mapping for this, and a fairly large projector. I am planning to put the project in the Ceramics Lab crit room, as there is a curved wall which is beneficial for the effect that I am trying to achieve.

Although I didn't get to spend as much time in TouchDesigner as I would like this week, I was still very much working on my project. My parents and I have started looking for our old home videos. Although most of the last decade or so's worth of videos, photos, and memories can be found on our phones, I found out that the ones before that are actually on tapes. I knew they were going to be harder to access but didn't realize by how much.

Overall, even though I had kind of a bad week, I tried to make the most of it where I could. I am really looking forward to continuing with TouchDesigner and the Arduino.
